NPT SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

New Paradigm Theatre Company (NPT) is committed to providing exceptional internship opportunities for the next generation of artists, educators and administrators. Through our program you will develop the tools you will need to move forward in your chosen field – observing, training, and collaborating with dedicated professionals. You will gain invaluable experience, build your resume, make connections and gain volunteer credits.

TIME COMMITMENT

NPT will offer a limited number of college internships this summer in connection with our Hunchback of Notre Dame production. There may also be one or two internships given to highly qualified high school students.
 
Rehearsals begin July 30th and run Monday-Friday 12:00-5pm with the youth and 6-9pm for adult rehearsals. Weekend rehearsals are TBD (probably 12-7). Interns will be asked to stay for the adult rehearsals weekdays 6-10pm on a rotating schedule to assist the stage manager, and directors. If you are applying as a “Directing” or “Stage management” intern you should plan on staying for all rehearsals.
 
The first two weeks of rehearsals (July 30-Aug 14) are held in Weston at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church – 285 Lyons Plain Rd. Weston.
 
The final tech week (Aug 15-17 ) is at Fairfield Theatre Co and will be Weds-Friday 9am-3pm. Interns will be expected at least 1 hour early to load in, and stay 1 hour later to load out.
 
Saturday and Sunday Aug 18/19 are show dates and will be TBD but probably 12pm-10pm Saturday (2 shows) and 11am-5pm Sunday (1 show) . Interns will help to load out after the final performance.

COMPENSATION

NPT interns are compensated with Full Tuition ($799) to the program, professional development and networking opportunities such as staff meetings, meet-and-greets, artist master classes and are a part of the show.
 
“Performing” interns are also given the opportunity to be members of the ensemble but cannot be cast as featured or leading roles. We may be casting the understudies for Hunchback and Esmerelda with college interns but these interns will have other duties as well. You will be able to participate in the Professional Master Classes during rehearsals.
 
• College Interns may be able to get college credit hours as per your college’s policy. Please check with your college administrators and NPT will follow up.
• High School interns will be given 50 volunteer credit hours per week for a total of 150 volunteer hours.
 
All interns will be given a one hour business mentoring session with their primary mentor i.e. Production, Direction, Stage Management, Marketing, Performing.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS EXPECTATIONS

• Interns will assist the teachers, directors and Artistic Director with a variety of tasks, from taking notes, to checking in students, to organizations props, costumes, to kid-wrangling, to helping with social media and marketing tasks during rehearsal, etc. This will be based on the “specialty” you have chosen.
• Each intern will be given the chance to choose a specialty expertise and will work directly with that pro. Some may have two specialties or work in pairs.
• They will participate in the rehearsals specific to their specialty .
• They should dress appropriately at all times especially during rehearsals and any time they are interacting with parents, students and other adults actors.
• There will be no foul or inappropriate language or behavior used by interns.
• They should realize they are a representation of NPT and will be asked to leave the program at the Artistic Director’s discretion if they do not uphold the standards set by this company.
They must give all conflicts in rehearsals to the Artistic Director or Stage manager by April 1st. More than 2 conflicts is not a good match to this internship.
• Interns should never be late and should always arrive 1/2 before each rehearsal begins.
• Interns should have their own transportation to rehearsals and performances.
• Interns should be local or be able to provide their own housing.
• They should be self-starters.
• NPT does not supply housing for interns.

QUALIFICATIONS

NPT offers internships for a few selected college level students and possibly High School interns with a range of experiences. They should be self-starters as well as being positive role models for the youth attending the summer program as well as polite and respectful to the professionals and adults.
 
You will be asked to sign a release regarding your social media posting and behavior during our rehearsal and production weeks.

BELOW ARE A LIST OF OUR “SPECIALTY” CHOICES FOR INTERNS

(While some interns will be offered the option of also being a “Performing” intern, in the ensemble, it is not a requirement. If you are a performer you will also choose one or more of the specialties listed below when you apply)

PRODUCTION INTERNS

Assistant Director: This intern will begin working before August and works with the Director and Stage managers. Should attend the pre-production meetings in the summer TBD. May be asked to run scenes or work individually with actors. Skills required: must be a self starter, great with taking notes, confident when working with children and adults. Must have the ability to think on your feet. No matter the age of this intern you must consider yourself a professional and not a friend to the cast. This is a great resume-building item and networking position.
 
Assistant Choreographer: This intern works with choreographer beforehand to learn choreography. Warms up the actors before each rehearsal. Runs dance calls for adults and youth. Skills required: Must possess an ability to be positive and work well with children and adults. No matter the age of this intern you must consider yourself a professional and not a friend to the cast. Must be a good dancer.
 
Assistant to Stage Management: This interns works closely with both the ASM and Production (AEA) stage managers. You will be expected to help set up and strike for both rehearsals and show. You may be asked to send out the show reports each day and to email cast with updates. You will be a backstage crew person during the shows. Preferred skills include: Great organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, computer and office skills, and basic understanding of stage management.
 

ADMINISTRATION INTERNS

Company Management/Producer: This intern works with the Artist Director and Stage Manger in a wide-variety of tasks and will begin early summer. Duties include, but are
not limited too: housing and travel arrangements, transportation, craft services, overseeing other interns, mail processing, VIP services such as assisting with donor tracking, gift acknowledgment, sponsorship relations and special events. They will also work with Artistic director to create templates for our summer production. Must have the ability to work with peers, basic office/computer skills and arts management. They can also be a performing intern.
 
Marketing: This intern works with the Artistic Director to assist with the preparation and distribution of social media promotions, posters and brochures, works on the programs and helps coordinate all public relations events. Preferred skills include: Basic Office (Microsoft, Word, Excel); graphic design; social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Basic photography skills a plus. They can also be a performing intern.
 

TECHNICAL INTERNS

Costumes: This intern works with the costume designer and assists with the construction and/or alteration of costumes for the production. May also search for costumes with designer. Assists with the load-in, categorizing and strike of show costumes. Preferred skills include: stitching, cutting, and draping. They can also be a performing intern.
 
Scenic: This intern works with the tech crew on the painting of all scenery or set pieces for all shows. Preferred skills include: painting, mixing and scenic craft skills. They can also be a performing intern.
 
Production: This intern works directly with the Production Manager. This position will work with any and all technical departments. Will also assist with the load-in and strike
for each show. Preferred skills include: basic knowledge in carpentry, electrics, running a deck, and props. They can also be a performing intern.
 
Props: This intern works with the props department to execute props for the production through construction, acquisition, set dressing and maintenance of props during the run. Assists with the load-in and strike of all props for each show. Preferred skills include: knowledge of Photoshop, experience in crafts, painting, sewing, woodworking, and upholstery. They can also be a performing intern.
 
Stage Operations/Deck Crew: This intern works with the stage operations/deck crew with the install of all scenery or set for each production. Works on run crew- moving scenery and working the rail. Assists with load-in and strike of all shows. Preferred skills: some carpentry, but mostly basic stage procedures.
